Collaborative project 2: The Forest Hills Church Backpack Buddies brochure

Our first community partner is the Forest Hills Church Backpack Buddies Ministry in Macon, where roughly 350 good souls volunteer each month procuring, packing, and distributing food packages to nearly 3000 students at twenty-eight schools across four Central Georgia counties. Each Friday these children take home grocery bags of food, snacks, and healthy drinks to their families who desperately need it especially over weekends, when government-provided school breakfasts and lunches are unavailable.

Brief background: In our D2L unit, see the quick snapshots of the Forest Hills BBM facilities to get a visual sense of their workspace and operation. I took the pics late Thursday afternoon, when all the carts and packets were packed (sorry) and ready for pickup or delivery Friday morning. On Monday, these spaces crammed with loaded carts and large bins of loaded grocery bags were nearly empty. Week in and week out, the volunteers load in supplies, pack them up, and send them off with close to 100% turnover of inventory. The volume and pace of the work is impressive, and the planning and attention to detail--down to the level of careful prepping bags for students with food allergies or other dietary restrictions--the whole operation requires intricate teamwork that runs with machine-like precision. On the several occasions I've stopped in over the last year and change, every volunteer working seemed every time to value and enjoy what they were doing. Quite an amazing team, this is!

Collaborative Project 2 (CP2): First steps on the brochure:

In addition to the pictures, see the existing brochure posted in the D2L unit--it's not completely "professional," but I think it is reasonably well done.

  • Have at least one meeting to discuss the brochure's strengths and weaknesses in content, layout, and design, including choices of colors, fonts, photos, and other visual elements. List strengths and weaknesses separately and with specificity.

  • Construct a list of materials or information you would need ideally to bring this 2019-vintage brochure into 2026 in any or all respects.

  • Also consider whether you favor keeping the half-fold four-page format, or would some other format be more effective? As in the traditional tri-fold six-panel brochure? Consider pros and cons of each format you discuss.

  • In every meeting for this project (and any others), a member other than the team leader should take notes of key topics discussed in the meeting and summarize the group's thoughts on strengths, weaknesses, and items or info needed to do a professional-caliber new brochure. Consider these notes informal "minutes." Include the names of all team members present at the meeting.

After sharing it with the team seeking corrections or improvements, submit the final draft of this document in the CP2 dropbox.
