Tutoring at the Macon State ARC
(Academic Resources Center)Macon State offers excellent one-on-one tutoring across a variety of disciplines at the ARC (Academic Resources Center) on both the Macon and Warner Robins campuses. The Macon ARC is on the ground floor of the library; the Warner Robins ARC is in the Academic Services Building, Room 214. Your number-one option for help with writing assignment and any other work in my classes is me, of course—always feel free to seek my help in person during office hours or by appointment, and by telephone and email. But getting help from a tutor at the ARC is a great second option.
We have at both ARC locations a dedicated and very capable tutoring staff eager to assist you particularly with any aspect of writing in particular, from brainstorming and exploring topics to all matters of grammar and mechanics. Getting help from our carefully selected and properly trained tutors can help your writing (and thus your grades!) improve dramatically, and it's certain that you'll do better to get help from college-sanctioned tutors at the ARC rather than having boyfriends or girlfriends, parents, children, roommates, grandparents, etc. look over your work. Too often the tendency with untrained "helpers" is to step in and make changes in your writing directly (which is technically plagiarism), rather than teaching you to recognize and improve problem areas in your writing on your own, as professional tutors do. I strongly encourage every student to take advantage of the outstanding free tutoring available through the MSC Academic Resource Center on either campus.
Copied below is a helpful statement from ARC Director Tim Vick:
"Tutoring is available for most MSC classes free of charge in the Academic Resource Centers (ARC) on the Macon and Warner Robins campuses. Other services include Academic Success Skills workshops and tutor-led study groups. The centers also have computer workstations with Internet access.
To check the schedules for subjects tutored and tutor availability, go to the ARC website at: http://www.maconstate.edu/arc/.The Macon ARC is located in the lower level of the Library building on the Macon campus. The WRC ARC is located in room 214 of the Academic Services building on that campus. To schedule an appointment in the Macon ARC, call (478) 471-2057. For an appointment at the WRC ARC, call (478) 929-6770.
How to get the most out of a tutoring session:
1. Start right away. Students who begin tutoring from the beginning of the semester typically do better than those who wait.
2. Book your appointments early. During peak times, you may need to book at least a week in advance to get the times you want.
3. Come prepared. Please bring your syllabus, class notes, textbook and specific assignment. Look over the readings and try the problems. If you can, bring a list of specific questions. The more you prepare, the more you will get out of the session.
4. If you miss a class, please get notes from a classmate before your tutoring session. Tutoring is not a substitute for attending class!"
The suggestion to prepare questions and bring a given assignment with you to tutoring sessions is particularly important. Of course you can always show tutors all information pertaining to most of my assignments by pointing them to www.chipspage.com. . . .
