In-class exercise 2

Here is the exercise we didn't get to in class Wednesday.  I intended that you spend no more than 10-15 minutes on this assignment, so don't get too carried away. . . .

Part 1: Your primary task is to write a brief introduction of no more than five sentences that would open a letter in either of the following scenarios, paying particular attention to how your audience is likely to receive your communication (i.e. feel about it):

Option a) You are addressing a church's board of deacons or elders, either supporting or opposing a proposed increase in salary for head minister, who currently makes $120,000 per year.

Option b) You are writing on behalf of a community organization to the owners of eight bars on a prominent downtown street, asking them to be more diligent in cleaning up their sidewalks before other businesses on the street open at 8:00 a.m.

Part 2: Also explain briefly, in three sentences or less, what you intend as the tone of your letter, and why you chose this particular tone.

Submit the assignment via email (sent to chip@chipspage.com) anytime before midnight Monday.
